stages
does everyone go through stages with a blog?
I'm still new to this and have now gone past " the 'oh Things I Overheard In the Supermarket' that would be a good thing to put on my blog" stage. At first I had lots of ideas then I decided that those ideas were crap. (Overheard in the supermarket?? seriously.)
I suppose part of the change is because I started this for a couple of reasons, to keep busy while I look for a job and as a way for family and friends to keep in touch.
The thing is family and friends don't seem to be reading this or if they are they don't leave comments so I don't know.
So I suppose what I'm asking is, is this a normal stage of blogging, an awareness of the audience? (or lack of)

Interesting question. For me stages are forever changing. When I first started my blog last fall, I was exclusively an atheist rant. Although still certainly an atheist, I no longer have that as my main focus. Why? Oh, I got responses, but they were generally from outraged christians and while that was fun for awhile it got tiring. I then went to exclusively being a Canadian politics blog. That can get tedious especially when you are trying for a post a day. So, as I am a large lover of newspapers, that's what I attempt to be. I like to be a little all over the map. My latest post being a good example. I'll cover god, politics, sports, stupid stuff, etc. Awareness of audience. Yes, the letters to the editor, the comment section. She is a bitch goddess to be true. One night I went through the archives of my fav blog, Red Tory. RT, who writes just exquisitely, went for over a year with no comments! A year! Amazing to me that nobody would pay attention to his very fine written posts. That appeared to all change for him in the run up to the last election. I figure I have about 6 regular readers and 4 casuals. Not bad. The thing I like is that they follow your links around. I saw Anuur here on your blog and as she is one of my regulars so I assume she found you through me. I think links lists are important, but I shy away from ridiculously long ones. The rule of thumb I use is if somebody leaves 2-3 comments on my blog, I link them and I will read their posts and comment when interested in something. Anyhow...ta-ta, Amanda.
I'm reading it Amanda! And June is too. But i have no constuctive comments to make right now....
omar, thanks for that.
maybe i
just need to think about the focus of it. I was not sure about he liks either, you know, if it was ok to just put a link to someone else or if I needed to ask first, so I might borrow your 'rule' if that's ok?!
and thanks too Clare and June! comments don't HAVE to be constructive, you could just tell me to shut the feck up!

I wondered that as well. I've seen folks ask, but I take it for granted that folks like to be linked, so if their blog is of interest to me I go ahead. If they don't, they can let me know. It has happened to me yet.
This is an interesting site I found last night and had some fun at:
http://vixentales.blogspot.com/
This is a different example of linking. Vixen's blog is an advice blog, so I assume she doesn't do a whole lot of commenting elsewhere. I might link a blog like this for my own convenience if I plan to go there periodically.
i read it every day, just don't post comments on it.
stella
stella, Ive sent you an eamil explaining this better...
Hi Amanda,
Thanks for your post! And I'm enjoying your blog :)
I have gotten a tad confused/frustrated with the blogging thing as well. I did one when I was travelling, for similar purposes as yours, to keep in contact with friends and family. But they never wrote back! And it used to drive me nuts! I felt like I was writing to them, because sometime you do that, you're writing and thinking, X or Y will love this, and then neither X, Y or Z bothers to bloody respond to their virtually personal correspondance!
But regardless, I think the pleasure gained from actually writing the blog, for whatever reason, far outweighs the frustrations. :)
